Zoomed Out | An Introduction

If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that our happiness and health, and of course, those closest to us matter the most.

This year we saw nearly 5 million more Canadians start working from home. But how does someone suddenly start working from home if they've never had the resources to properly manage their work-life balance? How do they maintain health self-care habits, manage a household, have a social life and meet all their work deadline?

The concept isn't very surprising. But what is alarming, is the number of people experiencing burnout at a faster rate than ever before. Lemongrass House wants to help shed light on the issue and help bring awareness around better self-care habits and practicing and how to get life back without the stress.

This month, we will be featuring weekly blog content giving insights on how to better manage working from home. To start, here's a list of possible signs that you might be "Zoomed Out" and things that you think may be helping, but in reality, they are causing more harm than good.

How many are on your list?

6 Signs You Are "Zoomed Out"

Hitting Snooze

One of the most common signs of being rundown is the good, old snooze button. The average person needs about 6-8 hours of sleep a night to ensure they are well rested, their bodies have had a chance to replenish and, of course, to maintain good mental health. If you find that after 6-8 hours sleep you are hitting snooze button and sleeping another 2 hours, this could be a sign that your body is telling you it needs to rest properly - away from stress.

Sleepless Nights

When you miss a night of sleep, your body feels tired. But if it's only one day, you can typically pull through and just head to bed early the following night. Problem solved. Now imagine being awake for hours, not being able to fall asleep, waking up multiple times, tossing and turning... all those stress related reactions have a HUGE impact on your overall sleep. A healthy person should be able to fall asleep within no more than 30 minutes. Is it stress? Overthinking? Caffeine too late? Which brings us to the next point

Mid Day Crash

Everyone experiences a lull in the day. Energy dips, almost closing time, whatever the case may be. But there's a difference between needing to get up and walk around the house or outside for 15 minutes compared to dying without coffee or any caffeinated beverages. The half life of coffee is about 5 hours. So the more you are adding to your body, the more your body carries it over. When a person experiences a good night's sleep, a single cup of coffee (and sometimes none at all) is more than enough. When consuming so much caffeine to make up for your mid day crash, your body goes into panic mode adding all kinds of unhealthy stress to you brain chemicals, organs and mental wellbeing.

High Anxiety

So what do all those things have to do with being "Zoomed Out?" They all contribute to your stress. These things all happen before you even start your workday. University of Guelph professor, Nita Chhinzer, talked recently about working from home and the negative impacts its had. More people are losing motivation, asking themselves "what's the point" and becoming easily distracted from their actual workload. On top of that, there has been this increase on "creating work culture online" which is added pressure for new WFH employees to manage and "make it work." When we sat in offices, a quick walk-by someone's desk or an email was enough. Now, since the pandemic, the need to force work culture using video programs is a common theme. But in reality, did that really have to be a Zoom call? All of these factors are forcing people to overwork themselves and develop unhealthy habits.

Less Downtime

A common thread people are witnessing, is the decrease in "downtime" activities. Whether it's unwinding before bed with a good book, watching your favourite Netflix series or even cooking dinner with your loved ones. More people are spending less time doing the things they enjoy. Why? We are exhausted. The thought of doing any of those just adds to the stress and we would much rather sleep. The problem? We wake up and do it all over again.

Feeling Isolated at Home

Working from home was originally a "cool" start-up concept that promoted healthy living and a lifestyle that allows you to do what you want, when you want. For a lot of people, this wasn't for them. They loved being at the office, seeing people, getting out of the house and then returning home and leaving work at the office. With WFH rates increases, more people don't have the luxury to "leave work at the office." Instead their familiar environment has been ripped from their daily routine and suddenly, there's a loss of connection with people, it's harder to separate work from home and it's also nearly impossible for some to know when the work day is done.

All these signs are normal given the situation of the world. And you aren't alone.

This month, we are dedicating our content channels to educating folks on what this looks like, how to prevent it and how regain that healthy control of your life again.

Our next post on Monday October 5th will showcase how to actually manage these symptoms and insights on healthy habits you can start right away. Looking to start today? Well, we have just the thing! For the month of October, we have marked selected products at 50% off to help promote and encourage acts of self care.

Lemongrass House Product Expiry Dates

Lemongrass House | Product InfoWe’ve had many enquiries about how long Lemongrass House products last after opening.

Lemongrass House products don’t have a traditional “expiry date”, but you will see an “open cap” icon on the label, and a number. That number tells you how many months the products will remain fresh once it is opened

For example, on the Bath Salts in the image above, you can see the number 6.  This means that from the time you open it, you have a full 6 months to use the product before it begins to decrease in quality and freshness.

Our products are professionally packaged in a way that seals in the freshness, and keeps them protected so that when opened for the first time they are as fresh as the day they were made.

If you want any more information, our product specialists are always here to assist you.

The Storm Will Not Remain

stay-calm

We want to brighten up your day (and ours!) a bit by sharing some Thai wisdom. To make it even better – with each Thai saying, we are running a little draw too!

This week’s saying is: “The storm will not remain for a long period, but very soon the storm disappears and calmness prevails everywhere.”

As we all continue to hunker down and stay safe, it can sometimes feel as if this “storm” will never end. Days and weeks go by and it feels like nothing is changing. But it is. It’s a slow process. By staying home, we are all helping to flatten the curve – to keep ourselves and others safe. Things are getting better.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we actually found ourselves moving forward – into a new and better “normal?” A more peaceful world where people slow down and notice each other more. A place where we take the time to appreciate the small things in life and to take better care of ourselves, each other and our beautiful planet. This is what we are pondering right now – and what we hope for in the future.

What gives you hope these days? Tell us in the comments and you might be a winner!

On May 1, we will randomly draw a name from the comments on our social media accounts and the person we pick will win a 60ml size of our Hand Sanitizer. Our herbal Hand Sanitizer is made with essential oils, aloe vera and cucumber, and contains 64% alcohol. It makes sure that your hands remain soft and supple, while keeping your skin germ-free.

Just a little reminder – if you purchase one of our select products, we will also gift one to a health care worker in our Buy One, Gift One campaign. You can learn more here: https://www.lemongrasshousecanada.com/pages/buy-one-gift-one.

Doing Something Good Without Seeking Attention

gold-buddha

As many of you know, Lemongrass House has strong ties to beautiful Thailand. In these difficult times, we thought it might brighten up your day a bit if we shared some wonderful Thai wisdom with you on a weekly basis. To make it even better – with each Thai saying, we are going to run a little draw too! Not only do you get words of wisdom, but you might also win a little something to bring you joy.

This week’s saying is: “Doing Something Good Without Seeking Attention.”

Despite the challenging situation we are all facing right now, a lot of goodness is shining through. You can see it everywhere… people helping others – family, friends and strangers. Health care workers are a perfect example of this – they are true heroes. Day after day, at great risk to themselves, they work to help others. We are so grateful to every one of them from the doctors and nurses to the technicians who give tests to the admin staff who keep the hospitals and clinics running to those who make sure that the hospitals are cleaned and sanitized on a daily basis.

So, tell us: What good in the world you have seen being done in these unsettling times? Is there someone in your life who is doing good deeds? They might not be looking for appreciation, but we’d like to sprinkle some on them!

On April 24, we will randomly draw a name from the comments on our social media accounts and the person we pick will win a 60ml size of our Hand Sanitizer and so will the person you told us about – who is doing good deeds. Our herbal Hand Sanitizer is made with essential oils, aloe vera, and cucumber, and contains 64% alcohol. It makes sure that your hands remain soft and supple while keeping your skin germ-free.

Just a little reminder – if you purchase one of our select products, we will also gift one to a health care worker in our Buy One, Gift One campaign. You can learn more here: https://www.lemongrasshousecanada.com/pages/buy-one-gift-one.

A Calming Contest

Self-isolating with the kids right now can bring unexpected and incredible joy, and it can create some special moments for your family. We’re also hearing from parents that it can be a little (well, sometimes a lot!) challenging when the wee ones act up.

With that in mind, we thought we’d run a contest to lift your spirits and let us have some fun for a moment. It might give all of us a little break from the more serious side of what is going on in the world.

From today until 5 p.m., Pacific Time on Tuesday, March 31, please post pictures or drawings by your kids (or even videos with the kids) telling us why YOU should win the special relaxing gift basket shown here. (Maybe get them to tell us some of the things they have been up to that might have upped your stress a little.)

We will randomly choose a winner on Tuesday evening and send the gift basket (valued at $85) off to her or him ASAP!

You can participate by sharing your kid’s drawing, photo or video to our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter account.

COVID-19 Update

This is a Statement from
Lemongrass House Canada

Like people all around the world, the Lemongrass House team has been closely monitoring the rapidly unfolding situation of the COVID-19 global pandemic. We find ourselves in extraordinary times. We are and will continue to follow the direction of the provincial and federal health care authorities and governments.

Lemongrass House Canada is a locally owned and operated business and the health and safety of our employees, customers and the public is our priority. As such, we have closed our retail store in Vancouver’s historic Gastown district for the time being, as we all come together to flatten the curve and to help stop the spread of this dangerous virus.

Our online store will remain open 24 hours a day and orders will be fulfilled promptly.

It is important for all of us to come together during this time. Please take care of yourself – and wash your hands often. If you are able, please reach out to family, friends, colleagues and neighbours to help them if they need it. A text, phone call or message on social media can mean a great deal. An offer to pick up groceries for those who are more at risk such as the elderly, those with underlying conditions, or those who are dealing with other challenges will be appreciated.

We are all in this together – as people and as a community on a local and global level.

Here is a link to a poster on How to Wash your hands, which applies to both soap and hand sanitizer.

Hair Care 101

hair-care-blog-post

Let’s talk hair. First, we should talk a little bit about the science of hair. Don’t let this scare you from reading this post. You will find this to be interesting and of value – and your hair will thank you for it!

The hair on our heads serves a purpose other than to enhance the face, help us look good, give us something to chew on (which is bad for you!), or to be put up in a ponytail. It protects the head from sunburn and helps the body retain heat. The hair also acts as a net to catch falling or airborne debris, protecting our eyes, nose and mouth.

Hair is made of keratin, which is a protein. Only the base of the hair, which is attached to our scalp, has nerve endings – which is why it hurts when you have a knot in your hair.

Now that we have talked a little bit about dermatology, let’s get into the fun stuff – hair care products!

First up: why natural hair care is beneficial to you. Chemical-heavy products, like shampoos that contain sulphates, won’t only strip natural oils from your hair but also from your scalp. This can be a real problem if you have sensitive skin because it will dry out your scalp. Most hair care products contain a lot of chemicals, such as parabens, which give these products a longer shelf life.

Silicones used in conditioners restore your hair after the harsh shampoo has stripped it. These chemicals don’t really result in healthy hair. It is a vicious cycle and it never ends until you take back your hair’s health.

At Lemongrass House, our Shampoos and Hair Conditioners are uniquely formulated with aloe vera, jojoba oil, sunflower oil and natural essential oils, which don’t strip the hair of its natural oils.

We know that everyone’s hair is different – and we’re here to help. For fine hair, we recommend green tea, rosemary and butterfly pea. For people with medium hair, it’s wild mint and Thai pomelo. For thick hair – royal lotus, ylang-ylang and jasmine do best.

Hair that is treated with colour needs a little extra attention. To help, we have leave-in Hair Oil and an extra moisturising Hair Mask. Our natural line of extra conditioning Hair Oil is great for restoring damaged or over-processed hair. Weekly treatments of our Hair Masks for extra dry, over-processed or colour-treated hair seems to be the sweet spot for keeping hair healthy and happy.

Come into Lemongrass House today and ask us about hair care. We can help you to switch your hair care routine to our fantastically nourishing and fragrant products.

Our All-Natural Spa Products Are in Hotels Around the World

Did you know that Lemongrass House products are currently being featured in well-known and exceptional quality hotels and spas around the world – including Aman Resorts and Spas, Four Seasons Hotels and Spas, Le Meridien Hotels and Spas, One & Only Hotels and Spas.

We look forward to providing our artisan-made, all-natural spa and personal care products to boutique hotels and spas across Canada – including some of the fine establishments in smaller cities and towns – from Tofino to St. John’s. While we love the cosmopolitan urban areas like the Greater Toronto Region, Metro Vancouver and Calgary, we have done our research and know that there are exceptional boutique hotels and spas throughout the country – not just in our largest cities.

Our focus is on boutique hotels, spas and small chains that are looking to add special touches to their guests’ experiences. Lemongrass House products allow accommodations to provide their guests with something special – something that the big, international chains can’t offer. One of our most popular elements is our private label program. We work with hotel and spa clients to create customized labelling that reflects their brand and unique hotel experience. At Lemongrass House, we know that small things done well – using quality ingredients and products – can mean big increases in guest returns and positive reviews online.

If you know of a hotel or spa that might be interested in speaking with us, please reach out and let me know. We would love to send them (and you!) samples of our fabulously fragrant, all-natural and incredible products.

The products are never tested on animals. It is clear that Canadians LOVE Lemongrass House products.

As we continue to serve our retail customers – in store and online (Spas & Hotels) – we are expanding our focus to wholesale clients in the hotel and spa sectors. Our approach, which supports the company’s overall brand, is to work with exceptional boutique hotels and spas – providing them with fabulous professional spa products such as face, body and massage oils; face, hand, foot and body creams; soaps, shampoos and conditioners – and so much more.

With fabulous fragrances such as lemongrass (of course!), blue chamomile, jasmine and tangerine, Thai bergamot and more, these handcrafted spa products upgrade every guest experience, inspiring them to return again and again.

We know that not every hotel or spa is looking for our level of quality and attention to detail. For those that are committed to providing an exceptional and quality bespoke experience for their guests – Lemongrass House products are unparalleled. They help to transport spa-goers to a mini-vacation where the exotic florals of Thailand engage their senses and imagination. They feel cared for and pampered, allowing them to relax away from the busyness of their day to renew their spirit and nourish their soul (and leaving them with softer skin).

Get Your Spa On – At Home – Post 2 in the Series!

We have heard from lots of readers that they loved the first blog post on creating a spa day at home and that they wanted to know more about how to do just that. We are here to help with our all-natural, handmade spa products!

We recommend brewing yourself a nice cup of tea – and Lemongrass House Mint & Lemongrass Tea is the perfect beverage to help you relax.

Getting a massage is always a nice experience, but sometimes, you don’t have that extra set of hands – so you can give yourself a nice massage with our Body & Massage Oils. You can rub them into your feet and hands, your shoulders, legs and arms. We sometimes put a few drops of the Body & Massage Oil into a bath – it helps to soften our skin and the fragrance fills the room. It’s pure bliss.

Another favourite is our selection of Toning Face Masks. Our face masks are made with kaolin white clay from Thailand, and we carry a variety of scents – there is something for EVERY body. For sensitive skin, try our calming and hydrating Blue Chamomile or Green Tea Face Mask. If you want your skin to feel rejuvenated and invigorated, use our Lemongrass or Aloe & Thai Pomelo. Our face masks tone the skin, assist in the removal of old skin, and encourage aging skin to renew its appearance. And they smell and feel great!

We have quite a few customers who are hooked on our face masks – both men and women! EVERY body loves them. They will make your skin feel great and we bet you will get lots of compliments on how refreshed and energized you look!

If your skin is feeling dry, try our Jojoba Bead Body Scrub. Our body scrub gently exfoliates and hydrates the skin and releases surface toxins and impurities, leaving skin feeling soft, smooth and radiant. For extra-dry skin, we also have a range of Salt Glow Body Scrubs made from sea salts. The sea salts exfoliate the skin and soothe sore muscles. They are fabulous!

Last, but not least – one of our most unique products is our Thai Herbal Compress. Thai Herbal Compresses are poultices filled with herbs and spices. These compresses are used in Thai massage and are renowned for providing deep relaxation while relieving stress and fatigue. They are usually steamed with hot water and then gently applied to parts of the body. The healing benefits of the herbs and spices are released into the pores of your skin and relax tight muscles, providing you with a unique spa experience that will make you feel like a new person!

Taking time for yourself is important. We actually think it’s crucial. All you need is 15 minutes or half an hour – and if you have an hour, that’s even better! You can refresh, re-energize, relax or rejuvenate.

When life is busy, a little home spa day can make you feel so much better!
